Virtual Internship Guidelines For Students

(As per AICTE Internship Framework – 4-Credit Internship)

1. Introduction

Virtual internship program is designed to provide undergraduate students with practical exposure to industry, in line with AICTE guidelines on internships. On successful completion of the virtual internship project and all required submissions, the student will receive an Internship Certificate from the host company and the institute will award 4 academic credits (subject to institutional rules). The said virtual internship would be offered to students at reasonable cost; the student has to pay and register for the said virtual internship program.

2. Eligibility & Duration

  • Open to: Undergraduate students (as per institute’s eligibility criteria – e.g., from 2nd year onwards) OR as per Institute / University norms.
  • Credits: 4 credits, equivalent to approximately 160–180 hours of internship work.
  • Duration: Normally 4–6 weeks full-time or 8–10 weeks part-time.
  • Mode: Online / Virtual Internship


3. Roles and Responsibilities

3.1 Student

  • Read and follow these Internship Guidelines carefully.
  • Report to the Company Mentor and follow all instructions related to work, reporting, and timelines.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Faculty Mentor / Internship Coordinator.
  • Complete the assigned project tasks, logbook, interim reports, and final report/presentation on time.
  • Adhere to all company policies on conduct, confidentiality, safety, and security.

3.2 Company / Industry Mentor

  • Allocate a project or meaningful set of tasks aligned with the student’s discipline.
  • Provide orientation, guidance and periodic feedback.
  • Verify student’s attendance and work (sign-off on logbook, if applicable).
  • Issue an Internship Certificate upon successful completion.

3.3 Faculty Mentor / Internship Coordinator

  • Approve the internship offer and project topic.
  • Guide the student on academic expectations, documentation and timelines.
  • Review periodic updates and provide feedback.
  • Evaluate the final report, presentation and logbook.


4. Internship Process and Documentation

Students are expected to follow this process and keep all records properly.

4.1 Before Internship Starts

  • Application & Selection
    • Apply to the company as per institute/company instructions.
    • Once selected, collect internship offer letter/email.
  • Approval
    • Submit the offer letter to the Internship Coordinator / Faculty Mentor for approval.
    • Get written approval before joining.
  • Orientation
    • Attend any pre-internship briefing conducted by the institute.

4.2 During Internship

  • Attendance & Working Hours
    • Follow company working hours and attendance rules.
    • Be punctual and reliable.
  • Daily Logbook / Work Diary
    • Maintain a daily or weekly logbook mentioning:
      • Date
      • Tasks performed
      • Skills / tools used
      • Key learning
    • Get it reviewed periodically by the Company Mentor (if possible).
  • Mid-Internship Review (if applicable)
    • Submit a brief progress report to the Faculty Mentor.
    • Address any feedback from company or faculty.

4.3 After Completion

  • Final Report
    • Prepare a structured internship report covering:
      • Company overview
      • Project objectives and scope
      • Methodology / activities performed
      • Tools / technologies used
      • Key findings / outcomes
      • Learning and reflections
      • Challenges and solutions
    • Follow the format prescribed by the institute.
  • Presentation / Viva
    • Prepare a PPT and present it to the evaluation panel / Faculty Mentor.
  • Internship Certificate
    • Obtain the Internship Certificate including:
      • Student name, program, duration
      • Project title / role
      • Confirmation of satisfactory performance
    • Submit a copy to the institute along with report, PPT and logbook.


5. Code of Conduct

  • Professionalism
    • Be punctual, disciplined and respectful.
    • Use professional communication.
  • Confidentiality & Data Protection
    • Do not share confidential information without permission.
    • Do not upload company documents publicly without consent.
  • Academic Integrity
    • Submitted work must be your own.
    • Acknowledge all sources and tools used.
  • Use of IT Resources
    • Follow company rules on devices, software and access.
  • Behaviour & Discipline
    • No harassment, discrimination or policy violations.


6. Leave, Absence and Withdrawal

  • Leave Rules
    • Leave only for valid reasons.
    • Inform Company Mentor and Faculty Mentor in advance.
  • Long Absence
    • Inform immediately with supporting documents if unable to attend.
  • Withdrawal
    • Do not discontinue without informing institute and company.
    • Unauthorized withdrawal may lead to loss of credits.


7. Safety, Health & Work Environment

  • Follow all safety instructions of the company.
  • For remote / virtual internships:
    • Maintain a safe and ergonomic work environment at home.


8. Evaluation and Grading (4 Credits)

The institute will award 4 credits based on:

  • Attendance & Participation
  • Quality of Work / Project Performance
  • Logbook / Work Diary
  • Final Report
  • Presentation / Viva

The exact rubric and minimum passing criteria will be defined by the institute.


9. Communication & Support

  • For general issues:
    • First contact: Company Mentor
    • Second contact: Faculty Mentor / Internship Coordinator
  • For serious concerns:
    • Escalate to Institute Internship Coordinator / Head of Department in writing.


10. Student Declaration

Before starting the internship, each student should sign:

“I, __________________ (Name), __________________ (Program), have read and understood the Internship Guidelines. I agree to abide by all rules, maintain professional conduct, respect confidentiality, and complete all academic and company requirements honestly and on time.”
